Beta readers are people that will proof-read over your fan fiction. Depending on what you ask of them, beta readers will check over characterization, grammar, spelling, and everything/anything you ask them to. Beta readers are a great way to get a second opinion, make sure that your story is written the best it possibly can be, and to make sure you didn't miss a careless mistake somewhere in the story.
