Love Story

Buffy first met Spike in School Hard. Spike had come to Sunnydale to kill the slayer and claim himself as being the "big bad". He first of all spied on Buffy as she was dancing, visually turned on by how gorgeous she was but also he wanted to kill her. Spike set Buffy up, calling to her about "a man biting someone". Buffy runs off concerned.

Spike and a big group of his follower's came in to Sunnydale but unable to wait and stick to the plan of killing Buffy, Spike grows impatient and sets off to kill her on parent/teacher night. Their first exchange was one of hate, Buffy and Spike both couldn't wait to kill each other.

Buffy: Who are you?
Spike: You'll find out on Saturday.
Buffy: What happens on Saturday?
Spike: I kill you.

Spike: As a personal favor, from me to you, I'll make it quick. It won't hurt a bit.
Buffy: No, Spike. It's gonna hurt a lot.

However, Spike doesn't kill Buffy at all yet decides to call Sunnydale home until he does kill Buffy. His attempt to not kill Buffy greatly angers Colin (the anointed one). At Halloween, Buffy is turned in to a helpless lady and Spike is determined to kill her. He doesn't succeed again, even though he has killed two slayer's in the past he is unable to kill Buffy.

While trying to bring Drusilla back to health, Spike and Buffy meet up again and have an awesome fight. Buffy even comments that she prefers fighting Spike and he agrees which allows a cute little comedy routine with both them.

Spike: I'd rather be fighting you, anyway.
Buffy: Mutual.

After Buffy sleeps with Angel, allowing soulless Angel to be free. Spike grows increasingly concerned that Angelus is paying too much attention to his beloved Drusilla. He realizes that he couldn't be bothered killing Buffy and really wanted Drusilla to be his own. So Buffy and Spike team up to save the world together. The two are gorgeous together, both working together seamlessly to be defeat Angel.

Joyce: Know what?
Buffy: That I'm, uh...in a band. A rock band...with Spike here.
Spike: Right. She plays the-the triangle--
Buffy: --Drums.
Spike: Drums, yeah. She's hell on the old skins, you know.
Joyce: What do you do?
Spike: --Well, I sing.

Buffy: Yeah, probably watching me or watching you.
Spike: He won't get a chance to tattle on us now.

In Fool for Love, it is revealed that Drusilla left Spike as she knew he was in love with the slayer:

Drusilla: Why can't you kill her?
Spike: You're the one who keeps bringing her up! I haven't said a word about the bloody Slayer since we left California. She's on the other side of the planet, Dru!
Drusilla: But you're lying! I can still see her floating all around you, laughing. Why? Why won't you push her away?

"You can't blame the ghoul, Spike. You're all covered with her. I look at you... all I see is the Slayer."

Which of course he is but Spike doesn't know it yet. In season three, Spike returns to Sunnydale to give Dru's new boyfriend a curse and meets up with Buffy. They fight together for a while so that Spike will disappear sooner

Spike: What's your hurry?
Buffy: My hurry is my intense desire to get you out of my life. You tend to cause trouble.
Spike: I'll be out of your life in a few short hours. No trouble at all.
Lenny: Hello, Spike.
Buffy: No trouble at all.

Then Spike leaves Buffy with relationship advice about her relationship with Angel. Buffy breaks up with Angel, realizing that Spike is the only person in her life unable to see through her lies.

Buffy: I can't fool myself. Or Spike, for some reason.

Buffy and Spike next cross path's in season four as Spike returns to Sunnydale looking for the Gem of Amara. He finds the gem which renders the wearer invulnerable and then goes to find his arch nemesis. He realizes that Buffy has been used by Parker and taunts her and they fight again. Buffy beats Spike down and he escapes only to be captured by the Initiative. After Spike escapes from the Initiative, he tries to track down Buffy to kill her but finds Willow instead.

Spike discovers the Initiative have planted a chip on his brain which causes him amounts of pain whenever he tries to kill a human. He lives with Harmony until she dumps him and Spike is unable to eat anything without her help. Spike makes an offer to Buffy:

Spike: What part of 'help me' do you not understand?

Buffy: So you haven't murdered anybody lately? Let's be best pals!

Buffy and Spike clearly detest each other, but team up to find out about the Initiative. Spike and Buffy were then effected by a wayward spell of Willow's that caused the enemies to fall madly in love. Although they planned to get married, the spell was eventually lifted and the two came to their senses Unfortunately. ;)

Buffy: There's so much to decide. Ceremony, guests, reception...
Spike: Well, first thing, I'd say we're not having a church wedding.
Buffy: How about a daytime ceremony, in the park?
Spike: Fabulous. Enjoy your honeymoon with the big pile of dust.
Buffy: Under the trees. Indirect sunlight only.
Spike: A warm spring breeze tosses the leaves aside, and again, you're registering as Mr. & Mrs. Big-Pile-of-Dust.
Buffy: Stop it! This is our wedding, and you're treating it like a big joke.
Spike: Oh, pouty. Look at that lip. Gonna get it. Gonna... get it.
Buffy: Oh, stop.

Something Blue was a good indicator of how Spike and Buffy's chemistry (which was steaming!) and Spike clearly is attracted to Buffy and at the end would have continued the relationship if Buffy had showed any interest.

Spike bordered on suicide from his lack of being able to kill. When Spike learned he could still hurt demons he helped the Scoobies destroy a gang of Vahrall demons who were trying to open the Hellmouth and then parted ways with them. Buffy is not to cut up about the fact that Spike was trying to off himself:

Willow: If we leave him alone, he'll stake himself.
Buffy: And that's bad because...?

When Buffy and Faith swap bodies, perhaps the most interesting Spike and Buffy (well Faith in Buffy's body) interaction occurs. Buffy/Faith is at the Bronze and spot's Spike, she is clearly attracted to him and Spike shows more interest in Buffy getting more and more turned on as Buffy/Faith talks about popping Spike like "warm champagne".

Faith as Buffy: 'Cause I'm a stuck-up tight-ass with no sense of fun?
Spike: Well, yeah, that covers a lot of it.
Faith as Buffy: 'Cause I could do anything I want, and instead I choose to pout and whine and feel the burden of Slayerness? I mean, I could be rich; I could be famous; I could have anything. Anyone. Even you, Spike. (gets close)
I could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up. I've got muscles you've never even dreamed of. I could squeeze you until you popped like warm champagne, and you'd beg me to hurt you just a little bit more. And you know why I don't? Because it's wrong.
Spike: You and me are gonna have a confrontation.
Faith as Buffy: Count on it.

Spike turns away sexually frustrated and it is clear just how much he wants Buffy and how the two could have a sexual relationship. The season ends with Buffy and Spike being on the same side. Just.

Season five opens with Buffy and her little sister Dawn. Harmony returns and moves in with Spike in exchange with having sex with him. However, Spike realizes that after trying another attempt to get the chip out of his skull. He is in love with Buffy. He realizes this in a dream after having a confrontation with Buffy.

Buffy: Spike, I want you.
Spike: Buffy, I love you. God, I love you so much-
Spike: (awake) Oh, God, no. Please, no.

Although, waking up Spike says "Oh god no". He doesn't seem to really mind being in love with Buffy. He stalks her, smoking cigarettes and then when Buffy appears he makes up excuses of him being around her house:

Buffy: Five words or less.
Spike: Out. For. A. Walk. (pause) Bitch.
Buffy: Out for a walk at night by my house. No one has time for this, William.
Spike: On your merry way then. You know, contrary to one’s self-involved worldview, your house happens to be directly between – parts – and other parts of this town. And I would pass by in the day but I’m feel I’m outgrowing my whole burst into flame phase.

Buffy doesn't realize what is happening at all, however when she is early killed by a lone vampire in a routine night of patrolling, she became obsessed with how other Slayers were killed. She decided to talk with the one witness she knew of to other Slayer deaths, Spike. They went to the Bronze where he recounted his life story, and how he killed two Slayers in the past. He insisted there was no secret to killing a Slayer, that all Slayers have a death wish and one day Buffy would give in to hers. Buffy insisted he would never be the one to kill her because he was beneath her, which hurt Spike.

Spike: She was cunning, resourceful, oh, and, did I mention, hot? I could have danced all night with that one.
Buffy: You think we’re dancing?
Spike: That’s all we’ve ever done.

He went back to his crypt, where Harmony tried to talk him into leaving Buffy alone, but Spike took a shotgun and planned on killing Buffy once and for all. When Spike arrived at Buffy's home Buffy was crying over her mother's medical condition and Spike found himself comforting her in one of the most heart warming scenes in the entire series:

Buffy: What do you want now?
Spike: What’s wrong?
Buffy: I don’t want to talk about it.
Spike: Is there something I can do?

Spike's obsession with Buffy intensifies and he steals some of her clothes and underwear just to smell the slayer smell "Slayer musk. It's bitter and aggravating.". He then discovers that Riley is visiting a vampire for pleasure. He tells Buffy and Buffy and Riley break up. When Spike is telling Buffy that they need to go and find Riley, he discovers Buffy is sleeping naked and is even more turned on.

Buffy finds herself trusting Spike more and more and even entrusts him to take care of Dawn and Joyce (her most prized possessions) when the council came to do a check on her:

Buffy: Spike, I need an answer. Now. In or out? . . . You're the only one strong enough to protect them.

Spike is touched and takes care of Dawn and Joyce, watching Passions with them. Buffy continues to rely on Spike, when Dawn goes missing in Blood Ties. She goes to yell at him and then talks to him about her fears for what will happen now that Dawn knows she is the key. Spike offers her advice and they both go off to rescue Dawn.

Then the inevitable happens, Buffy finds out that Spike is in love with her. She first of all, can't really believe it:

Dawn: "Spike's totally in love with you."
Buffy: "Huh?"

She then goes to set him straight, however there is a small glitch. Drusilla has returned and she wants Spike back as a vampire. Spike is quite content to still live in Sunnydale, he realizes that he is through playing around. He doesn't love Drusilla, he's in love Buffy and although Buffy doesn't realize it, he knows that they have something.

Spike: And you wouldn't be able to touch me, because this - with you - is wrong. I know it. I'm not a complete idiot.

Spike: Buffy! Come on now, stop.  You can't just walk away from this.
Buffy: What part of punching you in the face do you not understand?
Spike: So we had a fight. It's not our first, love, and it doesn't change anything.
Buffy:  It changes everything, Spike! I want you out. I want you out of this town, I want you off this planet! You don't come near me, my friends, or my family again ever! Understand?
Spike: No, it's not that easy. We have something, Buffy.  It's not pretty, but it's real, and there's nothing either one of us can do about it.  Like it or not, I'm in your life, you can't just shut me out.

Unlike Buffy all Spike wants to do is talk about it. She turns away from him and so do all the Scoobies. Spike then finds out that Warren has build a robot girlfriend, and asks him to build a Buffybot. Spike gets captured by Glory the big bad and gets brutally toured and maimed while Glory tries to find out who the key is.

''Mark my words. The Slayer is going to kick your skanky, lopsided ass back to whatever place would take a cheap, whorish, fashion victim, ex-god like you!'' - Spike

Spike doesn't give away who the key is. Buffy dresses up as the Buffybot and goes to see Spike asking him if he told Glory that Dawn was the key. Spike touchingly tells the "Buffybot" that that he would never betray the "not so pleasant" Buffy as he is so in love with her, he couldn't bear her being in that much pain and would rather die.

Buffy: Why did you let that Glory hurt you?
Spike: She wanted to know who the key was.
Buffy: Oh, well, I can tell her, and then you'll-
Spike: NO! You can't ever. Glory never finds out.
Buffy: Why?
Spike: 'Cause Buffy ... the other, not so pleasant Buffy ... anything happened to Dawn, it'd destroy her. I couldn't live, her bein' in that much pain. Let Glory kill me first. Nearly bloody did.

Buffy is so touched by Spike, she gives him the first real kiss the two have shared. Buffy tells Spike that what he did for her and Dawn was real and she will never ever forget it and thanks him.

Spike then becomes more of Buffy's ally. When, Tara is brain sucked by Glory, Buffy makes sure that Dawn stays with Spike and then confides in him what happened to Willow. It is only when Spike tells her that he would kill Glory if she died, that Buffy gets the message how serious Willow's grief is and goes to save her best friend.

Spike: You - so you're saying that a ... powerful and mightily pissed-off witch ... was plannin' on going and spillin' herself a few pints of god blood until you, what, "explained"?
Buffy: You think she'd ... no. I told Willow it would be like suicide.
Spike: I'd do it. Right person. Person I loved. I'd do it.

When Dawn is discovered by Buffy to be the key, Buffy trusts Spike to drive the gang to peace as he is

Buffy: If Glory finds us, he's the only one besides me that has any chance of protecting Dawn.

Together they fight Glory and Buffy even tends to Spike's hurt hands when he saves her from a sword.

Spike: Ow! Easy with the delicates.

When Buffy is so mortified by Dawn being captured by Glory, Spike tries everything to save his girl. He gets information about Glory and fights for Buffy. In the Gift, Spike is touched when Buffy invited him back in to her house and he admits that he appreciates Buffy treating him like a man. He makes Buffy a promise that he will protect her and Dawn until the end of the world.

Spike: You don't come near the girl, Doc.
Doc: I don't smell a soul anywhere on you. Why do you even care? Spike: I made a promise to a lady.
Doc: Oh? (They fight) Then I'll send the lady your regrets.
Spike: No. .

Buffy ends up committing suicide to save the world:

Buffy: I love you. I will always love you. But this is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles ... tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I'm okay. And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world ... is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me.

The camera pans out showing Buffy's dead body with Spike sobbing his heart out.

In season six, Buffy is revived from the dead by her friends. Although, Spike is happy to see her alive, he knows that she shouldn't of been brought back as Buffy may have been wrong. He is so upset that he cries when Xander talks to him about it.

Spike: Willow knew there was a chance that she'd come back wrong. So wrong that you'd have ... that she would have to get rid of what came back. And I wouldn't let her. If any part of that was Buffy, I wouldn't let her. And that's why she shut me out.

When Buffy comes down the stairs to meet Spike (which transcends to the gift where Buffy is walking away from him, she is now meeting him) the two hold hands and have the most sweetest moment on the show with Spike telling her that he remembers exactly how long she has been gone for and

Buffy How long was I gone?
Spike Hundred forty-seven days yesterday. Uh ... hundred forty-eight today. 'Cept today doesn't count, does it?

Buffy confesses to Spike when she comes back that hadn't been in hell at all during her death, but was in heaven, and the forced return to the hard cold reality of Earth after such an experience was almost too much for her, but she made him promise not to tell the others.

As Buffy adjusted to her return to the land of the living, odd occurrences started to happen. Images of the dead and short possessions by an angry spirit plagues the people who raised Buffy. Willow learned that as a side effect of her magic a demon had been created which was stuck between realities. When it was discovered that the spirit would dissipate unless it killed Buffy, the spirit attacked Buffy, but Willow and Tara were able to make the spirit solid enough for Buffy to slay it. Buffy confessed to Spike that she hadn't been in hell at all during her death, but was in heaven, and the forced return to the hard cold reality of Earth after such an experience was almost too much for her, but she made him promise not to tell the others.

''I do remember what I said. The promise. To protect her. If I had done that... even if I didn't make it... you wouldn't have had to jump, but I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but... after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again... do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways... Every night I save you.'' - Spike

Spike and Buffy bond much more in the upcoming episodes. Buffy talks to Spike more about finances and what is going in her life and the pain she is feeling with her friends expecting her to be happy all the time:

Buffy: I don't know. I just, I feel like I'm spending all of my time trying to be okay, so they don't worry. It's exhausting. And then, I...
Spike: And that makes 'em worry even more.
Spike: You want me to take them out? Give me a hell of a headache, but I could probably thin the herd a little.
Spike: Knew I could get a grin.

Spike even helps Buffy out with a night drinking on the town as the evil troika threaten Buffy by playing tricks on her. Buffy admits (although half pissed) that Spike is the only person she can even stand to be around.

Xander came across a charm and spell to summon a musical demon, and tried it for some fun. What he ended up doing was summoning a demon called Sweet who forced the whole town of Sunnydale to break out into song, and causing the occasional case of spontaneous human combustion. During the confrontation Buffy admitted to the group about how she was in heaven when she died, and how hard life was for her now. She ends up kissing Spike at the end of the musical.

After kissing Buffy, Spike tries to talk to her about it the next day. Buffy doesn't want to rebuffing him saying it was only a few harmless kisses. Spike is pissed off saying that it isn't. Willow does a spell causing the gang to forget all of their memories, Buffy and Spike become Randy and Joan and both team up together trusting each other implicitly. Buffy immediately stakes a vampire ("Stay away from Randy!") showing that even forgetting her memory she still feels as if she should be protecting him.

Buffy and Spike realize who they are, and they kiss again at the Bronze. While Buffy is patrolling, Spike and Buffy talk about their kissing in the recent nights. Buffy brushes it off to being depressed about Giles leaving yet Spike doesn't believe her knowing that she felt something. Buffy brushes him off and Spike realizes that he can hurt her without the chip being activated. He phones her up and he asks Buffy to meet him. She hangs up and they end up meeting. Spike shows Buffy that he can hurt her. Badly. They both fight:

SPIKE: I'm in love with you.
BUFFY: You're in love with pain. Admit it. You like me ... because you enjoy getting beat down. So really, who's screwed up?
SPIKE: Hello! Vampire! I'm supposed to be treading on the dark side. What's your excuse?

Then Buffy kisses Spike and the two of them sex, and they tear down the building in the process. The morning after, Buffy is repulsed by what has happened. Spike is happy, he always knew that the best thing to killing a slayer was doing one. Buffy runs away and then discovers that Dawn is missing, she goes to find Spike to help her find him. The two look for Dawn and Buffy tells Spike that their time together was one of the most degrading times she has ever had. Spike agrees with her, but doesn't mean it.

Spike and Buffy continue to have a sexual relationship, with tons of cute moments in between however Buffy isn't really emotionally present as they are making love. After Warren attempted to frame up Buffy and make her thing she killed Warren's old girlfriend Katrina , Spike attempted to cover up the death to save Buffy. Buffy wouldn't accept his help and took out her frustrations on him, beating him severely up. Spike croaks out that you always hurt the one you love. Spike and Buffy continue to have a relationship helping each other out with "muscle cramps" but when Riley comes back and catches Spike and Buffy in bed together they break up for the final time:

BUFFY: I know that. (pauses) I do want you. (Spike looking surprised) Being with you ... makes things ... simpler. For a little while.
SPIKE: I don't call five hours straight a little while.
BUFFY: I'm using you.

When Xander and Anya get married, Spike brings along a date to make Buffy jealous which it does. The two talk about their relationship and end up leaving on a happy note.

Anya then accepted D'Hoffryn's offer to become a vengeance demon again. She returned to Sunnydale and when Xander didn't want to marry her, just continue dating, she attempted to wish him out of existence, but was frustrated because she couldn't grant her own wishes. She attempted to get Willow, Tara, Dawn and Buffy to wish something bad on Xander, but they were not any help. She then planned on getting Spike drunk and getting him to make a wish, but they ended up having sex together in the Magic Box. Through a secret camera planted by the Trio that the scoobies had uncovered Xander discovered Anya and Spike having sex and nearly killed Spike for it. During the fight it was revealed that Spike and Buffy had been having sex, and Xander walked away disgusted in both Anya and Buffy's choice in lovers.

Then, Spike and Buffy's relationship takes a bit of a nasty turn. Spike goes to visit Buffy upset that she won't have sex with him anymore and apologizes for having sex with Anya. Buffy admits she does have feelings for him but she can't trust him enough for it to be love.

Spike: Trust is for old marrieds, Buffy. Great love is wild and passionate and dangerous. It burns and consumes.
Buffy: Until there's nothing left. That kind of love doesn't last.

He tries to have sex with her and then realizes that he has to leave to get what Buffy deserves. A soul.

In season seven, Spike returns with a soul. Buffy is shocked to see him and realizes what he has done and cries for Spike. He is being controlled by the first and is a tad crazy. Buffy isn't sure if she can trust Spike but continues to come and check up on him. While helping Buffy, a telepathic girl Cassie tells Spike that Buffy will tell him that she is in love him:

Cassie: She'll tell you. Someday she'll tell you.

Buffy realizes what is happening to Spike and makes sure that he is removed from the basement and makes him live with Xander. She tells Dawn that she does have feelings and defends Spike for his actions in Seeing Red. The two grow closer as Spike realizes he is killing under the first's influence. Spike tearfully asks Buffy for her help in helping him get rid of the big bad. She agrees, and then tells Spike that she believes in him.

Spike then is kidnapped by the Ubervampa and is toured. Spike tells the first that Buffy believes in him and that's all he needs to keep on surviving

The First: And what makes you think you have a choice? What makes you think you will ever be any good at all in this world?
SPIKE: She does. Because she believes in me.

In Sunnydale, Buffy also thinks of Spike and makes sure that she saves him. When she does, no words are needed to be spoken. The two are just glad to see each other. When they are out patrolling, Spike is hurt when Buffy sits on him. She sees Spike in pain and checks him over to make sure he is okay. He confirms to her that he is fine and the two hold hands.

Spike started to experience a breakdown of his implant which was going off at random. Buffy attempted to call Riley to get help for Spike. Unable to locate Riley Buffy and Spike decided to break into the Initiative to get the drug they used to keep him sedated. In the remains of the Initiative headquarters Buffy and Spike were attacked by a demon, which Buffy slew, then discovered by a military team who said Riley sent them to help. The military were under orders to help Buffy in any way she needed, and offered to repair or remove Spike's implant. Buffy decides to remove the chip.

BUFFY: (looks at Giles) Right. Either repair the chip, or to remove it.
GILES: You had it remove—You removed the chip?
BUFFY:  (smiling, trying to look innocent) Yeah.
SPIKE: Had to make a choice.

Buffy goes out on a date with the high school principal, however it is clear that when Spike interrupts the date and Xander gets hurt, Buffy tends to the one person she cares most about. Spike. Buffy looks at Wood who understands that her heart belongs to Spike. Spike offers to leave Sunnydale but Buffy tells him that he can't leave and that she needs him to be around. Not for the mission but for her. She isn't ready for him to leave her.

SPIKE: It, uh, it talked to the little boy. Said it wasn't time for me yet. I should move out. Leave town before it is time for me.
BUFFY: No, you have to stay.
SPIKE: You've got another demon fighter now.
BUFFY: That's not why I need you here.
SPIKE: Is that right? Why's that then?
BUFFY: 'Cause I'm not ready for you to not be here.

B Buffy continued to train the new potential Slayers who arrived in her home. She introduced Robin to her operation.  Buffy then tells Spike that she needs him back, the Spike who is able to fight. Spike has his coat back and his rocks and becomes Buffy's fighter W

The story took on a life of it's own and a portal opened which Buffy entered. She found herself face to face with the Shadow Men, those who created the first Slayer. Back in Buffy's home her place in this world was taken by a demon. The demon trashed the place and escaped. Theorizing that they would need the demon to get Buffy back home, Spike captured it as Willow, Anya, Dawn and Kennedy combined efforts to open a portal to send the demon back.

The Shadow Men offered to give Buffy more demonic power, but she refused it, not wanting to become less human then she already was. They then offered her knowledge of what was to come, and showed her a vision of an army of Turok-Han. Willow barely was able to control the magic energy in the spell she was casting, and had to drain some energy from Kennedy and Anya to make it work. As Willow lost complete control Xander was able to ground her and return her to normal. The portal open and demon thrown in, Buffy returned home.

Faith returns and Buffy lead the potential Slayers and her friends in an attack on the Seal of Danzalthar. A lot of the potentials die and Faith, Dawn and the rest of the Scoobies decide they don't want Buffy as their leader anymore. They kick her out of her house and Buffy finds an old building to sleep in. She is upset and Spike finds her. He laughs and jokes rebuilding her spirits and confirms that he loves her, regardless of what she does. He believes in her.

Spike: You listen to me. (kneels in front of her) I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that.  I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I prefer you didn’t.  I don’t exactly have a reputation for being a thinker.  I follow my blood, which doesn't exactly rush in the direction of my brain.  So I make a lot of mistakes, a lot of bloody wrong calls.  (looks into her eyes) A 100-plus years, and there's only one thing I've ever been sure of: you.  (she looks away, and he reaches towards her face) Hey, look at me.  I'm not asking you for anything.  When I say. 'I love you,' it's not because I want you or because I can't have you.  It has nothing to do with me.  (a tear rolls down her cheek) I love what you are, what you do, how you try.  I've seen your kindness and your strength.  I've seen the best and the worst of you.  And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are.  You're a hell of a woman.  You’re the one, Buffy.

They then spend the night together, no words. They just lie together, looking at each other. Completely in love and in awe of each other.

Renewed by Spike's belief in her, she finds the strength to find the scythe. A weapon that the first tried to conceal from her. Buffy then talks to Spike about their night together. Spike tells her it was the best night of his life. Buffy agrees that she was with him the entire time, but at the moment she doesn't want to determine what has happened. She's content just being together, but after the battle she will define how she feels about him.

After killing the Preacher, Buffy sees Angel and kisses him. Spike sees the whole thing. Buffy then sends Angel away after telling him that although she thinks of a future with him at the moment, she wants to be with Spike and although she can't think of a future with Spike, he is in her heart.

She then goes to see Spike, and tells him that she didn't shove her tongue down Angel's throat and asks him to be with her and give Spike an amulet given to her by Angel as her Champion. He agrees, and Buffy relaxes for the first time and the two cuddle each other like in Touched. Buffy then realizes she knows how to fight the First and tells all of her friends. She then goes to be with Spike.

Willow and Kennedy cast a spell that empowered all the potential Slayers with full Slayer strength. Buffy fought bravely against the horde of Turok-Han vampires inside the seal, but was severely out-numbered. Anya was killed by a Harbinger of the First Evil. Spike's amulet activated and rays of pure light decimated the ranks of the Turok-Han. Buffy's team retreated as Spike and Buffy stayed to finish the job. Buffy sees that Spike is going to die and realizes that she is in love with him.

Buffy: "I love you"

Spike sees that she does love him but cannot bear for Buffy to die with him, and shakes her hands away from his. He tells her to go. She looks at him and runs off.

The survivors in Buffy's group escaped in a school bus and made it out of town at the last moment. Buffy looks at out at the town and mutters her last word on the show. "Spike."
