The focus of my paper will be the character of Andrew, who during seasons six and seven of Buffy has emerged as comic relief and sly commentary by the show’s writers on pop culture and marketing trends. Beginning with his first appearance, I will trace the character’s evolution from stereotype (science fiction geek) to satire of the 18-34 year old male advertising demographic. I will show how the writers use Andrew’s genuine responses to entertainment and consumer products to lampoon advertising and promotions for entertainments such as the "Star Wars" trilogy. Finally, I will argue that Andrew may be seen as the Candide of Sunnydale, an innocent susceptible to unscrupulous forces because his self-image is defined only by what he sees. Andrew cannot exist outside his post-modern, corporate media-saturated world, which in turn does not propogate itself unless it is influences the buying decisions of young men such as Andrew. |
