Buffy in the Underworld – Representations of Greek Mythology in Postmodern Demon Dimensions
[Click on the link above to see this paper's placement in the SCBtVS Program.]
Besides carrying an essential tale of Greek Mythology as a Leitmotif throughout the series – the slaying of an seemingly endless number of vampires can be seen as a postmodern transportation of the myth of Sisyphos (regarding the senselessness of an ancient order which seems to have no end) –, in Anne Buffy is forced to trespass into the demon dimension, the conception of this counterworld bearing a strong resemblance to the concept of the Underworld in Greek Mythology and its trespass by Orpheus in order to rescue Eurydike from the arms of damnation. In Once More with Feeling she has to save Dawn from the Hades by singing, stepping into the role of Orpheus once more. My paper wants to show how mythology is transported into a postmodern pseudo-reality via the examples of the myths of Orpheus and Sisyphos. |
