The Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah Approach to Naming: A Slice of Slayer Slang
[Click on the link above to see this paper's placement in the SCBtVS Program.]
Title-of-Presentation: In my presentation, I will examine a subcategory of slayer slang: names. I won’t be looking at actual character names like "Xander" or "Spike"; instead, I’ll focus on expressions like "Sit-Back-And-Watch-Your-Life-Turn-To-Crap-Guy" and "a neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker." A key resource will be the Buffy Dialogue Database’s A.K.A. list—a nearly-complete catalog of the insults, terms of affection, bizarre descriptions, and other ways the characters on BtVS (and Angel) have named each other. My paper is partly inspired by Michael Adams’ excellent Slayer Slang book, which thoroughly analyzes the words, phrases, and usages unique to the show. I will analyze the varieties, qualities and purposes of naming on BtVS, looking particularly at how the show’s distinct and humorous language works in the context of specific episodes. |
