“I think I was in heav-ven.” Who will forget the musical revelation that concluded “Once More with Feeling”? The prominence of characters’ reactions in story developments is an oft-noted feature of “women’s” forms including melodrama and soap opera, where an event is often less important than its retelling or even the secrecy surrounding it. An analysis of the patterns of revelation in BtVS and Angel will demonstrate the importance of revelation to the narration. The discussion will examine how revelation structures an episode, using the example “Once More with Feeling” (BtVS 6). Particular attention will be given to how revelations structure seasonal story arcs, using the examples of the revelation of Dawn’s identity as The Key (BtVS 5) and the revelations of Cordelia’s pregnancy and Jasmine’s identity (Angel 4). The meanings and viewing pleasures produced by the role of reaction in the Buffyverse will be analysed through the connections to soap opera narrative structure, themes and audience response. By tracing the narrative strategies of revelation and their relationships to other narrative forms, this analysis will highlight aspects of BtVS and Angel which contribute to this unique hybrid of narrative forms. |
