The Male Hero in Feminish Society: Comparisons of Buffy's Spike and the Iroquois' Hiawatha

Themes in BtVS have been compared with the great literature of Europe. Yet its feminist ethos goes against Euro-American tradition. Comparisons to the oral literature of more feminist cultures is appropriate. Feminists find Iroquois culture to be one such feminist role model: how does the Iroquois mythos compare to that of the Buffyverse? One parallel is the male hero: Buffy's Spike and the Iroquois' Hiawatha share a history of cannibalsim, redemption, and the salvation of humanity. Further, their conversion to the good is made complete in both instances through remembrance of a mother's love. The male hero finds his heroism in the context of female nurturance in both the imaginary world of Buffy and in the sacred teachings of an ancient feminist culture in the real world.
