Till the end of the world part 5
AIN’T LOVE GRAND
Spike had been unconscious for five weeks, the spell had to have time to work, it didn’t just go ‘voila’ it took time and Spike had plenty of it. Spike dreams were filled with Buffy, it was like he was reliving all the things that had happened. Her death, her resurrection, her. He loved her. Dawn was there a lot too, their conversations, there secret meetings at night when she couldn’t sleep. She used to sneak out her window and to his crypt where they would spend countless hours deep in conversation.
He missed her, he missed them both. One night he suddenly awoke with the feeling of dread creeping over him. Something was wrong, very wrong.
Buffy and Dawn had heard nothing from him for a month and a week and they were getting worried. They would at least expect a phone call or a letter. They didn’t know if he was dead, or if the spell had back fired, or if he turned evil again. Buffy sat on her bed thinking, and Dawn was watching TV.
The phone rang and they didn’t get excited. They had wished it was him a thousand times and each time they were disappointed.
Dawn answered halfheartedly,
“Hello?”
“Hello Niblit.”
Dawn screamed to Buffy and Buffy ran down stairs and picked up the second phone,
“Spike is that you?” Buffy asked excitedly,
“Well do you know any other blonde vampires?”
Dawn laughed,
“Why haven’t you called, we were worried, we thought something bad had happened.”
“No luv, I’ve been unconscious since the last time I spoke to you last, side affect of the spell.”
“Well” Buffy asked, “Did it work?”
Spike was thinking,
“I don’t really know, I haven’t tried it yet.”
Dawn was so happy it was him,
“So what did the doctor do?”
Spike didn’t want to answer; he didn’t know what to say,
“Well Niblit, they mojo’d me and that’s all I can say.”
Buffy was irritated that he wouldn’t tell them.
“Tell us, please.” Buffy begged.
“Well…I don’t feel the need, or I just don’t want to feed on humans anymore. I just think it’s wrong.”
The girls were flabbergasted,
“You don’t like it, are you okay?”
“Well you see slayer, that was the spell, I will only drink like I have been, with the blood bags.”
Dawn was confused,
“Is that the spell, it took that long to do that?”
Spike didn’t want to tell, but he couldn’t lie anymore.
“Well, that was only part of it.”
Buffy knew he didn’t want to tell, but she wouldn’t let him.
“What was the other part?”
“Yeah, tell us.”
“Well…” Spike began, “I was given a conscience.”
Buffy gasped,
“But don’t you need a soul for that?”
Spike didn’t want to answer.
“Well, I guess not.” He said quietly.
Dawn laughed,
“Well, you’re cool to come back now, aren’t you?”
She asked hopefully,
“Well, no. I need some time to think. I need to get used to this. I just need some time to be alone. I don’t know if I’m coming back, yet. You all shut me out a long time ago."
Dawn couldn’t believe what she was hearing, he fine he was cool and he was good, why couldn’t he come back and get used to it.
“Why, oh I get it, you are scared. Shame the poor little Vampire is afraid. He’d rather be alone than be with his best friend and the girl he loves. You’re pathetic spike. You promised me you would come back when it was over, it’s over but you aren’t coming back. We can’t wait forever Spike, we needed you and you abandoned us, I hate you!”
And with that Dawn slammed the phone down.
He couldn’t believe it, maybe he should just have left and never come back, he should have never called, never written. Now thanks to this damn spell he was loosing his life.
Buffy was still on the line,
“Buffy… “ He began.
“No Spike, she’s right, you should stop being so afraid. When you realize this why, don’t you give me a call, actually no don’t come back; don’t try to see me, Dawn or any of my friends. I mean it, you hurt me and Dawn, so just stay away.”
She put the phone down and went to see if Dawn was all right, she was crying. She felt betrayed.
Spike sat there, stunned. He had just lost them both, in a second. He didn’t understand.
He got up and walked slowly to where Charlie sat, he was devastated. Charlie knew, and understood. Spike grabbed his coat and ran outside and onto his motorbike. They didn’t let him finish; they didn’t let him tell them that he was sorry. They didn’t let him tell them that he was deciding to come back early and to spend every moment with them.
He rode all-night and stopped at a bar in the day. He got home a day later. It was good to be home.
Buffy was upset; she shouldn’t have said those things to him. She should have told him that she understood. She hated herself and everybody around her.
Spike got to his crypt and walked inside, the same musty smell was in the air and he loved it, this was his home. He had to see Buffy and Dawn and try to patch things up.
He had an idea; it was worth a shot, loosing them would mean loosing his wish to live.
The doorbell rang and Buffy answered it, there was nobody there. But a small envelope was left on the doormat, Buffy read:
Did you honestly think you could get rid of me that easily? You never let me finish, I wanted to say that you all shut me out, but a friend had opened the door for me and I was now the happiest man on earth. I had a little sister, a best friend and a girl that meant the world to me. And then there was Buffy She is the first thing I think of when I wake up. And the last thing I think of when I go to sleep. She kept me alive even though I was dead. She might hate me and wish me dead, but she is the only reason I am here today. When she died my world ended, and Niblit kept me going. When she rose again, my life was better than ever, I did this all for her, my love for her will never end. ‘Til the end of the world, and I mean it. But if the hate for me is so strong, I will leave. The last thing I’d ever want to do, was make you all miserable.
Buffy burst into tears, she ran up stairs and handed Dawn the letter, and she studied it and also started to cry. He must be back. Buffy grabbed her sister’s hand and they started to run to Spike’s. They were running through the graveyard when a huge creature leapt out of the trees and landed on Dawn. Dawn tried to fight it but she wasn’t strong enough, Buffy reached down and lifted the creature off Dawn and threw it into a tree,
“Run, get Spike.” Buffy screamed as the demon got up and lunged at Buffy, it hit her across the face and hit her head on a rock. He head was bleeding but she got up and continued to fight, Dawn ran as fast as she could and reached Spike’s crypt within record time. She burst through the door and Spike saw her and smiled until he saw the panic on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
“We were on our way here and a creature jumped Buffy and it’s beating her.”
“You stay here, Spike jumped up and ran outside and into the cemetery, he would never forgive himself if anything happened to her. He got there in time to see the creature grab Buffy from behind, he was strangling her.
“Spike, help me.” She said in between struggled breaths,
Spike leapt onto the creature’s face and bit it; the creature let Buffy go and screamed. Spike’s bumpy vampire face was filled with green blood and he spat the foul tasting liquid out of his mouth. Spike grabbed the creature and threw him into a tree. Spike turned to see if Buffy was all right and she lay there motionless. Spike’s anger bubbled to the surface and he looked around for something sharp. The creature got up slowly and Spike pulled the little knife out of his pocket. He stabbed the creature through the heart and Spike’s hand followed the knife. The creature slumped down and died. Buffy watched curiously as Spike pulled his hand out of the lifeless body. Spike was covered with a green blood and he spat on the creature,
“That’s my girl you were messing with, my slayer. Find your bloody own.”
Spike walked over to Buffy who was still a bit weak. He put his arms under her legs and around her waist. He lifted her up and carried her to his crypt. He lay her down gently onto his bed and stroked the hair away from her face; she looked up at him and smiled.
Dawn sat next to Buffy,
“You’ll be okay, right?”
Buffy smiled.
“Thanks to Spike, I will.”
Dawn turned to Spike, who still had green goo around his mouth,
“Bloody hell, this is disgusting tasting stuff.”
Dawn laughed; she hadn’t heard anyone say ‘bloody hell’ for a while.
“That monster looked familiar, think he’s part of some cult or something.”
Spike walked over to his bookcase and pulled out a book. He looked at himself and laughed,
“Don’t mind if I take a shower do you?”
Dawn smiled and kissed him on the cheek,
“I’m sorry.”
“Already forgotten.”
Spike took a quick shower to get the goo off of him, while Dawn looked through the book.
He put on some clean clothes and walked to where Dawn was sitting,
“Find anything Niblit?”
“No, nothing.”
Spike picked two more books out of the bookcase and started to look through it,
“Don’t I get a book,” Buffy asked smiling,
He handed her the book he was reading and got up to fetch another one.
They all sat looking through the books for hours and hours, until Spike smiled,
“I knew it, they belong to the order of ‘taureum obitus’ century death, they are a group of
Nasties who every century try to kill the slayer by stabbing her and then the leader, Perturbatus, stabs himself with the same knife in turn depositing the slayers blood into him self. He becomes invincible and of course wants to take over the world or destroy it, it’s different every time, they also tend to want to kill every human on the planet and bring the world into a time of hate and violence.”
Buffy and Dawn just stared at him,
“What, another apocalypse already?”
Spike smiled she was beautiful,
“ ‘Fraid so luv, but don’t worry, they never succeed. I know them, they were here a century ago, and they were foiled once again by the slayer. And believe you me you’ve been against tougher and still beat them. We just got to get them before they get you.”
Buffy smiled, he always knew just what to say.
She decided to deal with this tomorrow, she just wanted to sleep. Spike got a blanket for Dawn and she soon passed out on the couch, Buffy was afraid, she wasn’t afraid of the new monsters, but she was afraid of life. And afraid of her feelings for Spike. Her friends were fine with it, she wanted to tell him but she was afraid, she wouldn’t tell him, not yet anyway.
She lay awake watching Spike pace around the room before he stopped and sat on a small stool. He got up and started to pace again. Buffy remembered when Glory took him, they all thought that Spike would tell her that Dawn was the key, but he didn’t. None of them understood that he loved her, they all thought that it was a phase and that he didn’t mean it. He meant it so sincerely that he was willing to die to protect the key, and that was why she had entrusted her to him. He underwent such torture and pain for her and she never even looked back and said that he regretted it. She knew that he loved her more than life itself. She also knew that he blamed himself for her death. It was her gift, from the first slayer, it wasn’t his fault, it wasn’t anybody’s.
She got up and looked at him carefully,
“Stop pacing, it’s annoying.”
She grinned at him and he grinned back,
“I am worried.”
“What about?”
“Me, I haven’t even seen if this spell had side affects, I might turn into a stink bug or something. Magic always turns to bite you in the ass, always”
Buffy giggled at this last remark,
“You seem alright to me.”
Spike looked at her and tilted his head,
“What are you looking at?”
He carried on staring and noticed that he wasn’t starring at her, but behind her, she turned to see an old mirror,
“Oh my God, I have a reflection.”
He stared at himself in amazement,
“I am really hot.”
Buffy burst into laughter,
“It’s not funny, I’m serious.”
He stood and stared at himself,
“You know, it’s been over a hundred years since I last saw my reflection, not bad.”
Buffy walked behind him and reached up and ruffled his hair,
“I’ve always wanted to do that, now you look much better.”
Buffy nearly died, God he was gorgeous.
He turned to smile at her and she smiled back.
He hated being so close to her and not being able to touch her.
She watched him in the mirror, he was hot, he was beyond hot.
“How can I have a reflection?”
He suddenly asked as terror rose in his throat,
“I don’t know, I guess the magic is just biting you in the ass.”
She giggled, and he laughed too. Spike wondered if he had a soul, no. Angel has a soul yet he can’t see himself. He was relieved, it was one thing having a conscience, but a soul.
Buffy sat down on his bed and he sat with her,
“So what do you think of this new evil?”
She sighed
“We’ll beat them, and then they’ll be gone. No biggie.”
He smiled at her,
“I still can’t believe I have a reflection.”
She smiled and laughed,
“Even though you can see your self, don’t change. Your perfect just the way you are. Well maybe leave your hair all messed up like it is now.”
He couldn’t believe how close they were getting, her friendship was more than he ever asked for,
“How are you, in your friends way?”
She smiled,
“Things are great, I forgave them when they comforted me, they were there for me.”
Spike looked confused,
“Why did you need comforting, did something happen?”
She smiled,
“Yeah, you left.”
He looked at her in surprise, and she lent over and gently kissed him. She leaned into him and wrapped her arms around him and deepened their kiss. She had wanted this for so long, and now that she had it, she didn’t want to let him go. It just felt so right.
Spike wasn’t complaining, her lips were so soft and warm. She made him feel alive again, even human. He kissed her greedily, but knew nothing more would happen, well for one thing Dawn was asleep on the couch, second thing, he just didn’t want to push her away.
They kissed for several minutes until, they pulled back, she smiled at him,
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do this.”
“Yeah I do.”
She lay down on the bed and pulled him down next to her, she wrapped his arms around her waist and fell into a deep sleep.
