Chip Head
"I mean
Spike's a chip head but what damage can he do?"
Chip-y Quotes:
Spike:
Yes, bad, but let's skip that part and get to the part where I couldn't bite
you.
Willow: It's true. He had trouble performing.
Spike: Yeah, well, it looks like they've done me for good. Um...
Buffy: What are you saying?
Spike: I'm saying that spike had a little trip to the vet and now he
doesn't chase the other puppies anymore. I can't bite anything. I can't even hit
people.
Spike:
Was. And as soon as I get this chip out of my head, I'll be a vampire again. But
until then, I'm just as helpless as a kitten up a tree. So why don't you sod
off?
Buffy: Okay.
Spike: Oh, fine! Throw it in my face! Spike's not a threat anymore. I'll
turn my back. He can't hurt me
Woman:
(scared) I-I'm sure you're not evil.
Spike: Yes, I am. I am a killer. That's what I do. I kill. And, yeah,
maybe it's been a long time, but... it's not like you forget how. You just... do
it. (nervously) And now I can, again, all right? So here goes.
He morphs into vamp face. The woman screams.
Spike: This might hurt a little.
He bends over to bite her, then flings himself back, yelling in pain, crashes
into a Dumpster. The woman runs off. Spike crouches there clutching the
Dumpster, panting.
Spike: What the *hell* is going on?
Warren:
Here I am, here.
Spike: Bloody hell. Get on with it then.
Warren hands Spike the papers. Spike looks at them.
Spike: Help me out here, Spock, I don't speak loser. (gives papers back)
Warren: Okay, right, um... your chip works fine, yeah.
Spike: (frowns) There's gotta be something wrong -
Warren: No, no, listen. I don't know what that thing does... I'd like
to... (leans closer)
Spike: (leans back) Hey.
Buffy:
This is Spike. He's um... It's a really long story b-but he's not bad anymore.
Spike: Hey! What am I, a bleeding broken record? I'm bad, it's just I
can't bite anymore. Thanks to you wankers (to Riley).
Spike:
"I mean, am I even remotely scary anymore? Tell me the truth."
Willow: "Well, the shirt is kinda, not very threatening, and the short
pants, but you know it could also be because I know you can't bite, which I
guess isn't really what you need to hear right now, is it?"
Spike: "Stop, please, just clear out."
Xander: "Fine. But you break anything else while we're gone and you'll be
sleeping in the garage, buster."
Story of a Chip:
Spike got a chip implanted into his brain when the Initiative captured him. He can't hurt any "living person without intense neurological pain". Spike, or Hostile 17, was one of the only vampires to escape with the chip in his head. As James has often said, the chip to Spike is the equivalence of vampire being impotent. Spike suffers while believing he can't hurt anyone. For Spike the only pleasure he gets, is from the chip. He even tries to stake himself. And then Spike gets some relief, he discovers that he can hurt other creatures of the night:
Spike:
"What's this? Sitting around watching the telly while there's evil still a foot.
That's not very industrious of you. I say we go out there and kick a little
demon ass! What, can't go without your Buffy, is that it? To chicken? Let's find
her! She is the Chosen One after all. Come on! Vampires! Grrr! Nasty! Let's
annihilate them. For justice - and for - the safety of puppies and Christmas,
right? Let's fight that evil! - Let's kill something! (Fade to
black) Oh, come on!"
Spike helps out the Scoobies tirelessly, enjoying the chance of killing something and also by his love for the slayer. He always states that he will get the chip out and tries on a few occasions (kidnapping a doctor that Buffy meant to operate on Riley) to remove the chip but nothing works. When he discovers the chip doesn't work for Buffy, he automatically tries to bite someone. He can't go through with the deed and the chip is assumed to be still be working.
After returning with a soul back to Sunnydale, aided by the first the chip starts not to work. He massacres a few people (by a trigger mechanism by the form of a song). Instead of returning to his full force of his soulness, he asks Buffy help.
Spike then realizes that the chip isn't working and he has intense head pain. Buffy calls Riley and he tells her the chip is wearing out. If it isn't removed Spike will die. She has the power to make a choice. She decides to save him removing the chip.
Giles is worried that the chip may hurt others but Buffy reassures him that Spike can be a better man.
