Part 1

Giles voice-over: Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer…

Riley: …but she doesn't love me.

(Cut to Spike holding Buffy's jumper up to his face. Riley enters.)

Riley: You're in love with her, aren't you?

(Cut to Spike comforting Buffy on her front door step)

(Cut to Riley letting a vampire bite him. Buffy comes in, and stands watching them. They don't notice. Buffy walks out)

Giles voice-over: And on Angel…

Wesley: You're going to become human.

Angel: That would be nice.

(Cut to Angel and ghosts of the oracles)

Oracle: You have averted the apocalypse. Now you will have your reward. We will make you human

Angel: How?

Oracle: You need to experience one moment of true happiness, something which previously would have cost you your soul, and now, will cost you immortality. If you do achieve it, you will become human. I understand that this is what you wanted.

Angel: Yes.

Oracle: However, if you do not, you will stay as you are for eternity. We know it may be difficult, but we will help you. The slayer will remember the day that was taken from her, and all that passed between you. The rest is up to you. This is your only chance, warrior. You have 72 hours. Good luck.

(Intro.)

(Cut to Buffy coming into her room. She takes off her jacket, and sits down on the bed. She puts her head into her pillow and begins to cry. Suddenly Spike appears behind her and touches her gently on the shoulder. She jumps, and turns round, ready to fight. Then she sees that it is Spike.)

Buffy (wiping her tears away): Spike! You scared me. Look, I don't have time for…

Spike (sitting down next to Buffy): For me? Yeah I've heard it before, but haven't you considered that it isn't me who needs the time?

(Buffy says nothing.)

What, you need me to spell it out for you? You need to talk. Make time.

Buffy: It's fine. Really.

Spike: Yeah I hear that from every girl with puffy eyes and a red face. Beats me every time.

Buffy (sarcastically): You always did know what to say to a girl.

Spike: Well, I have got 143 years of experience. I've comforted a few damsels in my time…

(Buffy gives him a look.)

Spike: All right, so, maybe I've killed more of them, but much of the same thing. Same tactics, you know. (Pause) So, what's wrong.

(Buffy says nothing, just looks down at her hands.)

Oh come on! We weren't archenemies for all those years for nothing, you know! I know when something's bothering you, well one because you're crying and two, I'm the one who used to cause most of it!

Buffy: Yeah well don't flatter yourself.

(Pause)

When I saw Riley with that vampire, it was like, I didn't know him. It just got to me, that's all. It's not just the fact that he's been going to a vampire for kicks behind my back, it's the fact that he was always so, so unforgiving about…you know who.

(Spike looks down to hide his discomfort.)

It's like he thought that I was sick to have loved one of his Sub-terrestrials, that somehow they were beneath us. I mean, I thought we had something, I thought, I thought we could be happy, but I supposed I forgot that the words Buffy and happy don't really pair well.

Spike: Well that's a load of rubbish. I don't know why you're saying this. You know what I think? This isn't you. You're not Buffy. Nah, Buffy's that girl, you know, who fights anything (makes fist actions) which stands in her way, who's scared of nothing, the only one who's kicked my arse and got away with it.

(Buffy gives him a little smile.)

Spike: You know, when I get this chip out…

Buffy: I know, you're gonna rip my guts out, tear my limbs apart, feast on my blood…

Spike: No, actually, I was going to do those exact things to that little son of a bitch who calls himself your boyfriend for hurting you.

(Buffy smiles at him again.

Buffy: Thanks, Spike. You're really very sweet. I think that the Buffy of a year ago would have admitted to drug abuse rather than believing that she was actually saying this, but still, I mean it.

Spike: You forget that we were engaged to be married a year ago, my little sweet sugar dumpling. On this very day, actually. In fact, I was just thinking that we should go somewhere for out anniversary. Got anywhere in mind?

Buffy: Well, Giles did say that he thought I should patrol tonight. Something in his I'm-a-mystic-ex-watcher sort of sixth sense said something was up. He really should get a cat.

Spike: Perfect! Nothing like a good battle to bring the heat up.

Buffy (getting up and putting on a jacket): Well, don't get any ideas.

Spike: Would I ever!

(Cut to the front door. Buffy and Spike walk out together, laughing. Suddenly, Buffy stops, frowns, and looks around.)

Spike: What is it?

Buffy (confused): Nothing. Just a little cold, that's all.

(Spike takes off his jacket and gives it to her.)

Buffy (taking it, still uncertain about this feeling.): Thanks.

(They walk away together. Camera moves in on a close up of the trees. A figure steps out, and looks after Buffy and Spike. It is Angel, and he has a frown on his face.)

(Cut to Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya in Giles's apartment. Willow is sitting on the sofa with Tara. Xander is standing up, holding a beer, Anya is reading a book, and Giles is in the kitchen making tea.)

Willow: I mean, it's not as if he can't feel anything, is it? Because I know he has that whole lack of a soul thing going on, but does that mean that he doesn't have a heart either?

Xander: Well, when the man is proud of the fact that he killed hundreds of people, I'd pretty much say that all activity in that area is cold-blooded and villainous.

Anya (looking up.): Hey. Don't talk about me like that.

(Xander looks at her.)

Willow (ignoring them): It's not like he's incapable of love, I mean, he loved Drusilla, didn't he?

Xander: Yeah Will! Another mad murderous villain who nearly killed us all, on several occasions. Now are you telling me that Drusilla and our dear friend Buffy exist even in the same dimension?

Anya: They do, and yeah, that pretty much sounds like Buffy, apart from the villain part, or maybe not.

(Everyone looks at her.)

What?

Giles (entering with a cup of tea.): Now, what are we talking about? Buffy? Where is she?

Willow: Yes! I mean no, I don't know where she is, but we were talking about her. Her and Spike in fact, those two sworn enemies have been getting a little cuddly lately, not literally, but nearly!

Giles: What, Buffy and Spike? What are we doing, matchmaking now? Because I think you really should ask Buffy before you marry her off to Spike. (takes a sip of tea.) Again.

(Willow looks at him.)

Willow: Thank you, but no. I think they can do it on their own this time. I mean, if she can get over all that no breath no heart beat bloodsucker and if he can accept that she may one day be obliged to kill him, I think they could really be great together. Don't you think it's kinda sweet in an ironic sense, because you know they've hated each other for so long…

Xander: Will! Please, stop! Listen to yourself! Are you really serious, Buffy and Spike? Look what happened last time when she decided that the undead had really much more to offer than us everyday humans, and that particular dead boy even had a soul! Admittedly a pathetic one, but still! Now are you saying that a heartless killer like Spike can bring her anything but more misery? Will, some times I really think you're losing your hold on the world, and your judgement when it comes to relationships.

Willow: Hey. That's not fair. And look who's talking? Mr. Demon magnet indeed…

Giles: All right! All right! The pair of you are like little old grannies with all your bickering and matchmaking. Don't you think we should let Buffy decide for herself who she wants to be with?

(Cut to Buffy and Spike walking through campus, talking. We see them from the shades, from Angel's perspective, who is following them.)

Spike: I mean, when Dru cheated on me, you know, with that Chaos demon, ugly thing, I can't pretend that she didn't hurt me, because she did. I suppose it was my pride more than anything, I always hated being put down, being told I wasn't as good as somebody else, you know how it is. And it hurt.

Buffy: Yeah, I know what you mean, I suppose it's my pride that's more hurt than anything because of Riley. I mean, it's not like I'm dying of a broken heart or anything, somehow, I don't feel like I did, you know, when…

Spike: When Angel left. We're going to have to mention his name sooner than later. Buffy: That, that was different, it was, a different kind of hurt, it was, let's say…more permanent. Sometimes, I can still feel it. I mean, compared to that, this, this is nothing. I wonder why that is…

Spike (getting angry): Oh for God's sake could you be more blind? You loved Angel, God knows why, but you did. Commado boy, he's just something you've been playing around with, you know, something to fill the space that Angel left. You don't really love him. You know that, don't you?

Buffy: Yeah, I guess I do. I mean, I know, I always knew that he wasn't (pause) Angel, but as it couldn't be Angel, it had to be somebody. I was just lonely, I guess. I just didn't want to be alone.

Spike: Yeah I know what you mean, Harmony? Couldn't be more of a mistake.

Buffy (with a small smile): Is that what every girl you've been with is to you? A mistake?

Spike: Well, yeah. You are too. I mean, the Slayer and the Vampire who's killed two of them? Hardly Snow White and Prince Charming, is it? (Buffy looks surprised). But you're one mistake I'm not going to regret.

(Spike bends down and lifts Buffy's chin up, and kisses her. Buffy doesn't move. We see this from Angel's perspective, who turns around and walks away.)

(Close up on Spike and Buffy. Spike pulls away when he senses Buffy is not responding.)

Spike (Coughs): Hm um.

Buffy: I'm sorry, it just, it didn't…

Spike: feel right. I know. I won't push. I might look like that kind of guy, but I'm not.

Buffy: Thanks Spike. You're a nice guy.

Spike: I think that's the first time someone's said that to me.

Buffy: You know? I'm surprised.

(They smile at each other, but Spike can't help looking a little disappointed. Suddenly Buffy frowns and looks around.)

Spike: What's up?

Buffy: I don't know, it's that feeling, I can't quite put my finger on it, it's so familiar.

Spike: Is it a nest of vampires? Because I'm up for a good fight any time it's been a while…(He is silenced by Buffy's hand.)

Buffy: Oh God.

Spike: What?

Buffy: Angel.

(She turns and runs, first slowly, uncertainly, and then with more conviction, in the direction in which Angel disappeared. Spike stands still, looking worried.)

Spike (shouting): Buffy!

(End music)

Part 2

Wesley voice-over: Previously on Angel…

Wesley: You're going to become human.

Angel: That would be nice.

(Cut to Angel and ghosts of the oracles)

Oracle: You have averted the apocalypse. Now you will have your reward. We will make you human.

Wesley voice-over: And on Buffy the Vampire Slayer…

Riley: You're in love with her, aren't you?

(Cut to Spike comforting Buffy on her front door step)

(Cut to Riley letting a vampire bite him. Buffy comes in, and stands there watching them. They don't notice. Buffy walks out)

(Cut to Buffy and Spike standing in the wood.)

Spike: But you're one mistake I'm not going to regret.

(Spike bends down and lifts Buffy's chin up, and kisses her. Buffy doesn't move. We see this from Angel's perspective, who turns around and walks away.)

Buffy: Oh my God.

Spike: What?

Buffy: Angel.

(She turns and runs in the direction that Angel disappeared into. Spike stands still, looking worried.)

Spike (shouting): Buffy!

(LA. Night. Buffy is walking along a main street. Cars go past. She takes a turn down an alleyway, a curious expression on her face. Cut to Angel fighting a gang of vampires. Buffy appears at the end of the alleyway. She sees them)

Buffy: Looks like I'm just in time for the party.

(She rushes to Angel's aid. He stakes one of the vampires, and sees her)

Angel: Buffy? What…

Buffy: Don't talk. Just…Duck!

(Angel ducks as Buffy punches the vampire behind him. They fight for a while. Buffy sees Angel about to get staked from behind.)

Buffy: Angel watch out!

(She runs over, kicks the vampire. She is about to stake him when she suddenly stands still, with a frown on her face, she closes her eyes and flashes from 'I will remember you' go past. Suddenly her eyes open just in time for a vampire to stab her in the shoulder with a knife and another vampire to hit her head with a metal pole from behind, and she falls onto the floor, unconscious. Angel turns round, sees her, and quickly kills the vampire he is fighting. The other vampires have run off.)

Angel: Buffy!

(He runs to her and kneels down beside her. He takes in the blood pouring from the wound in her shoulder and the back of her head.)

(Intro)

(Cut to Angel pacing up and down outside a hospital room. He looks inside and sees Buffy on a bed with many tubes attached to her. There is a plaster around her shoulder. A doctor comes out.)

Angel: Is she going to be all right?

Doctor: It's too early to say. She's suffered severe injuries. The knife didn't do much damage fortunately, it just missed her collarbone, the wound will heal. As for the damage to her head…

Angel: Just tell me doctor. Is she going to be all right?

Doctor (hesitating): I won't lie to you. Her head received a severe blow, it could be concussion, she is unconscious at the moment…

Angel: So?

Doctor: and she may never regain consciousness. She's in a coma. I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do but wait. You can stay with her, talk to her, maybe she can hear you.

(Angel is silent. The Doctor goes back into the room, everybody goes out. Angel enters)

Doctor: Is there anyone else we can contact?

Angel: Yes. If you could call, um, Mr. Giles. I left his number at the desk.

Doctor: Certainly.

(Doctor leaves. Angel is alone in the room. He takes a look at Buffy lying on the bed, and goes to sit beside her. He puts his head in his hands.)

Angel: It's my fault. It's my fault. I shouldn't have let this happen. I shouldn't have let you endanger yourself for my sake, again, I was selfish. All I could think about was my own happiness, I didn't think that you, that you might not want to… I was wrong. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, but what can I do?

I don't know if you can hear me. There's been a lot on my mind, ever since I left Sunnydale, actually, a lot that you don't know. A lot that you might not want to know, but, if I let you die without telling you, I know I'll regret it for as long as I live, and God knows that I've had more than my share of regret.

I know that I am probably being selfish again, but I think that you deserve to know why you came. You know I love you, you know I always have, and always will. Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me going. If you died, I don't know how I could go on, knowing that there was no hope, nothing in my life but memories.

Memories. I have more of them then you might imagine. That's why you came. That's what I have to tell you Buffy, something about my memories. Something happened. Something, that, before, to you, never happened, something that you were just beginning to remember. That's my fault, it might be best for you if you didn't know, Buffy, but it did happen. You have no idea how important it was, it is to me. If it is all of you that I will have in the future, then I want to share it with you.

We had one day. One day, when we were together. That's what you were seeing, the day that was taken away from us, the day that never happened. A year ago, you came to LA, you were just about to leave when we were attacked by a Mohra demon. That part you'll remember. But, what happened next, when I killed the Mohra demon, and you left, that's not what really happened. What really happened…well, neither of us knew how to kill the demon, and so it got through the window. We decided to go after it, we split up, and I was the one who found the demon. I killed it, but before I did, some of its blood mixed with mine, and that made me human.

I wasn't sure so I went with Doyle to the oracles and they told me that it was for good and so, I went to find you and we had one day. One day. I can't describe it Buffy, or what it meant to me. I only you knew how I felt, how happy I was. For one day, you released me from what I was. You made me forget that I was damned. You made me feel human. How can I explain it? You wouldn't understand.

The only thing is, that it didn't last. It turned out that the demon had regenerated itself, and I went to fight it, alone, I couldn't bear to wake you, you were sleeping so peacefully. I couldn't fight it, it had become stronger and I had lost my strength. I would have died if you hadn't come to my aid, just in time. You killed the demon, but I knew that it wasn't the end so I went to the oracles again. They said that because I was human, many would die, even you. I couldn't let that happen to you, no matter how much I wanted every day to be like the one that had just passed so I asked them to turn back time, take back the day. I was the only one who would remember to prevent it from happening again. I came back to you, we said goodbye, and you said, you said that you felt my heartbeat, that you would never forget.

But you did. How can I have expected anything different. You're a fighter, but you can't win when it comes to the Powers the Be. The day was turned back, and we were back at the previous day in the office, and you were saying to me how we should keep our distance, and forget. Mohra attacked, I killed him, and, and you left, not knowing, not remembering what had happened.

Alone, I have carried that memory for almost a year now, and sometimes I almost wish that you would remember, but I guess that's the selfish person in me. At other times, I am glad that you don't remember, so you can be free from regret, and live your life like you've always wanted.

For complicated reasons, the oracles are giving you back memories of the day that was taken. You will remember, by the end of tomorrow, everything that happened. The reason I came to find you…maybe I shouldn't tell you, but I can't help but give myself a little hope.

The powers that be are giving me the chance to become human. I have until tomorrow at sunset to experience one moment of true happiness. If I fail, I will be what I am, for eternity. If I succeed, I become human. And the only true happiness I've ever experienced, is with you, Buffy, and that is why I came. I didn't expect you just to fall into my arms, God knows I had no right to expect at all, but it was the only chance, and I had to hope, that you still had feelings for me. I knew, that you were with Riley, I don't know what I was thinking. It's just that, I love you so much, and I always will, and I just hoped that you still…that you still loved me.

I followed you for a while. And then I saw you with Spike, and I saw you kiss him, and I knew that to you, I was probably no more than a memory. I suppose that's my fault, I could never have been what you needed, and now, I never will be. I don't want eternity when it is without you.

Maybe I've said too much, maybe I haven't said enough, but I just, I just wish that you could hear me. This is probably the last time I'll see you, and I want to tell you something.

(Cut to Buffy having a flash of her kiss with Angel in 'I will remember you'.)

Forget me, get on with your life, be with whomever you chose, Spike, if that's what you want. If you do that, I won't have lived for nothing. I just want you to be happy.

(Cut to Buffy having a flash of her and Angel kissing pushed up against the fridge.)

(He bends over her bed, kisses her gently on the mouth, strokes her hair, and holds his forehead against hers.)

(Cut to Buffy having a flash of their last kiss and her saying that she will remember.)

Angel: Goodbye Buffy.

(He stands up, takes one last look at her, and leaves.)

(Close up on Buffy's face. She suddenly opens her eyes.)

Buffy: Angel?

(As he is going out of the door he is met by Cordelia whom he ignores, and further down the corridor, Giles walking briskly followed by Spike and Riley. Angel just walks past them. Giles turns around and looks after him.)

Giles: Angel!

Spike: Oh ignore the moody sod.

(They walk to where Cordelia is sitting outside Buffy's room. Cordelia stands up.)

Giles: Hello Cordelia. I got the message. Is Buffy in there?

Cordelia: Yeah she's got concussion or something. Go on in.

(Giles goes in and Spike follows, but is barred by Cordelia.)

Cordelia: Spike? What are you doing here?

Spike: Listen sweetie I haven't got time for this, if you don't move out of my way then…

Cordelia: Oooohhh what's the big bad vampire going to do, bite me?

Riley (pushing Spike out of the way and trying to get into the room.): Couldn't have said it better myself.

(Cordelia stands still and does not move out of the way.)

Cordelia: Who are you?

Spike: Ha ha commando boy. Cordelia you know me. I'm not going to say you trust me but come on! I can't hurt a soul.

Riley: And I'm Buffy's boyfriend!

Spike: You forgot the little ex-factor there action man. Buffy saw you with that sweet little vampire and I doubt that she'd want to see you after that you know…

Riley: You little bastard. (Grabs Spike by the collar.)

(They are interrupted by Giles who comes out of Buffy's room.)

Giles: She's awake.

Spike and Riley: Oh thank god. (They look at each other venomously.)

Cordelia: It's about time.

(They all go into the room.)

Buffy (sitting up in bed): Hey Giles. Cordelia. Spike.

(with an edge to her voice) Riley.

Riley: Listen, Buffy, I can explain…

Buffy: It's a shame because I don't really want to hear you talk right now.

Giles: Buffy, are you OK? What happened?

Buffy: I came to LA to look for Angel and I found…

Riley (interrupting): Excuse me? You came looking for Angel.

Buffy (coldly): You don't have the right to say anything.

(Pause)

I came looking for Angel and I found him fighting a group of vampires. I helped him but in the middle I had this weird vision and one of the vampires took the opportunity to hit me in the back of the head with something, hard. That's when I went out cold. I feel fine now.

(she suddenly remembers something and looks around the room.)

Where's Angel?

Cordelia: Oh he stormed off about five minutes ago. He was really weird, kinda out of it. He totally ignored me which is unforgivable considering…

Buffy: Where did he go?

Cordelia: Hey! I'm not his PA or anything you know! (Giles looks at her.) Well, maybe sort of but it's still not my business to know where he is every single minute of the day.

Buffy (realizing what Angel has gone to do): Oh my God. Giles, how many hours until sunrise?

Giles: um, about 2, why?

Buffy (getting up): Get me my clothes. I'm getting out of here. We've got to find him. I want everybody to split up, look anywhere that's exposed to sunlight.

Cordelia: There's the old Buffy, ordering us about like we had nothing better to do than to search the whole planet on some foolish whim of hers.

Buffy: Cordelia I don't have time for this. Unless you want Angel to die then I suggest…

Cordelia (interrupting): Hey hey! Who said anything about dying? Is he trying to do a suicide on us or something?

Buffy: Something like that. Now I need you to concentrate…

Giles: How do you know?

Buffy: He told me.

Riley: When you were in the coma?

Buffy: Yes. Don't argue, just do as I say. We've got to find him before the sun comes up.

(Cut to Cordelia looking around some park.)

Cordelia: Angel! Angel!

(Cut to Giles on top of a building that is a car park.)

Giles: Angel! Angel!

(Cut to Riley walking down a main street.)

Riley (under his breath as if to himself): Angel, Angel, Angel. It's always Angel.

(Cut to Spike in a back alleyway. He kicks over some bins angrily.)

Spike: Angel! Angel, you bastard.

(He kneels down and begins to cry.)

(Cut to Buffy running along the beach. The sun is almost up. The first rays touch the water)

Buffy: Angel! Angel!

(Suddenly she sees him standing on the beach, alone. She runs to him, he is weak because of the sunlight that is travelling towards him. He is taken surprised by Buffy who tries to throw her coat over him, he pushes her away, right on the shoulder, she winces as the wound begins to bleed again, meanwhile Angel collapses as the sunlight begins to come onto the beach. Buffy throws her coat over him and drags him to the nearest building, a derelict church that is falling apart. They get inside. The air is full of dust. They both cough. Buffy drags Angel to the darkest part of the church, towards the alter. It is sunlight outside. She props him up against the alter and sits down facing him.)

(Buffy strokes his face and kisses his forehead.)

Buffy: Angel? Angel. (She is crying.)

(Angel opens his eyes, and smiles at Buffy and closes them again.)

Angel: This is a dream. I'm dead.

Buffy: No, you're not.

Angel: Buffy? Is it really you? (He tries to sit up but falls back, weak because the sunlight is so close. He sees her bleeding shoulder.) Your shoulder…

Buffy: It's fine.

(Buffy puts her arms around his neck and leans against his chest.)

Buffy: Don't talk now, just hold me.

(He leans his chin on the top of her head and kisses her hair. She turns her face up towards him and kisses him gently on the mouth, twice. He seems to be trying to resist, but he cannot and kisses her hungrily. They move, kissing more passionately. Suddenly Angel breaks away and looks at her.)

Angel: Wait. You don't know what you're doing.

Buffy: You're wrong. I'm not going to listen to you this time. Last time I did, you left. This time, I'm going to do what's best for me. I know everything Angel. I heard what you told me in the hospital. I've wanted this chance for us more than anything I've ever wanted in my life, and I'm not going to let you take it away from us.

Angel: But Spike? Riley?

Buffy: But nothing. It's my decision, not yours, and this is the one I'm making.

(She bends up to kiss him again. Angel cannot hold back any longer and they make love right there in the derelict church. Later, Buffy is sleeping quietly on Angel's chest, wrapped in an old flag, he is also asleep. Suddenly his eyes open. The look is similar to that in 'Surprise'. He tries to stand up, but falls to the ground, he turns vampire face. Buffy wakes, and hurries to his side, stroking his hair. He turns back to normal, a white glint appears in his eyes.)

Buffy: Angel?

(Angel looks at her, and suddenly walks towards one of the shafts of sunlight. Slowly, cautiously, he puts his hand in the sunlight. Nothing happens.)

Angel: I'm human.

(He turns around to face Buffy and they look at each other joyfully.)

(Cut to Spike, lying in some back alleyway with a whisky bottle in his hand. The sunlight is not far away. He is singing (very badly out of tune) 'Wind beneath my wings'.)

Spike: did anyone ever tell you you're my hero? Etc..

(We see someone coming towards him wearing black boots and a long coat. The stranger comes towards Spike, flings a blanket over him, we see things from Spike's perspective, who struggles weakly. The stranger kicks open a door, goes in, and throws Spike on the floor.)

Spike: Hey! Do you know who I am?

(The person pulls away the blanket. Spike is dizzy. The view focuses. It is Drusilla.)

Drusilla: Good morning, my sweet.

(The camera moves to Spike's astounded face.)

(End music.)
