TRASCRIZIONE PROFILO DI ANGEL DAI DVD DELLA 'BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER COLLECTION'
DAVID BOREANAZ: Angel is a 242-year-old vampire with a conscience, when he started the show. He's now 244. So he's had a birthday, he's 244. He was born in Ireland. Comes from a wealthy family. He was an aristocrat in his early years.
- ANGELUS:<< A man playing at cards should have natural intelligence or a lot of money. And you're sadly lacking in both.
So I'll take me winnings me own way. >> - ("AMENDS")
DAVID BOREANAZ: He meets Buffy, falls in love.
- BUFFY:<< I'm not saying I'm not happy about it tonight, but...If you are hanging around I'd like to know why.>>
ANGEL:<< Maybe I like you. >>
BUFFY:<< Maybe? >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: The common thread is that they both understand...Buffy is a vampire slayer and she doesn't have a normal life. She's not like other kids in high school.
- BUFFY:<< I'm the chosen one. It's my job to fight guys like that. What's your excuse? >>
ANGEL:<< Somebody has to. >>
BUFFY:<< What does your family think of your career choice? >>
ANGEL:<< They're dead. >>
BUFFY:<< Was it vampires? >>
ANGEL:<< It was. >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: She was powers that be that control her to fight evil and atone for her self-worth. And Angel's basically the same way, trapped under his own conscious and has powers that he doesn't quite understand yet.
- ANGEL:<< I'm weak. I've never been anything else. It's not the demon in me that needs killing, Buffy. It's the man. >> - ("AMENDS")
DAVID BOREANAZ: The powers that be what we have no idea but will find out. There's that link of that love, that understanding of a vampire in love with a vampire slayer.
- ANGEL:<< I did a lot of thinking today. I really can't be around you. Because when I am... >>
BUFFY:<< Hey, no big. Water...over the bridge. >>
ANGEL:<< ...All I can think about is how I wont to kiss you. >>
BUFFY:<< Kiss me? >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: That eternal love, that thirst of being far apart and still loving each other and having that strenght. Because of that connection, people can identifly with it.
SEASON 1, EPISODE 7
"ANGEL"
DAVID BOREANAZ: Throughout season 1 is Buffy's fight against the Master. And within that is the friends that she meets and it leads us to Angel.
- WILLOW:<< Angel is a vampire? >>
BUFFY:<< I can't believe this is happening. One minute we were kissing and the next minute...Can a vampire ever be a good person? >>
GILES:<< A vampire isn't a person at all. It my have the memories, even personality of who it took over, but it's still a demon at the core. There is no halfway. >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: She realises he's a vampire and she's freaked and he's freaked and they deal with it. They don't think of the consequences.
- BUFFY:<< Go ahead. No as easy as it looks. >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: What's appealing about Angel's character is that he lived for a long time, has journeyed many years, has a lot of history to him.
- ANGEL:<< The elders conjured the perfect punishment for me. They restored my soul.
BUFFY:<< They were out of boils and torment? >>
ANGEL:<< When you become a vampire, the demon takes your body but not your soul. That's gone. No coscience, no remorse. It's an easy way to live. You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done, and to care. I haven't fed on a living human being since that day. >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: A man on a mission that is atonig for his sins and trying to make something of himself. A lot people look in the mirror and what do they see? Are they afraid to look in the mirror and see what's really there?
- ANGEL:<< I can walk like a man, but I'm not one. >> - ("ANGEL")
DAVID BOREANAZ: That's a big question for Angel's character. And it's something that, you know...I know I wake up every day and look in the mirror and try and see the truth.
SEASON 2, EPISODE 19
"I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU"
&
SEASON 2, EPISODE 14
"INNOCENCE"
JOSS WHEDON: But the time we got to the second season, Angel had become a very prevalent character. And we'd learned a lot about the character and we progressed him.
- GIUDICE:<< This one cannot be burned. He's clean. >>
SPIKE:<< Clean? You mean he's... >>
GIUDICE:<< There's no humanity in him. >>
ANGELUS:<< I couldn't have said it better myself. >> - ("INNOCENCE")
JOSS WHEDON: The second season was about playing the interpersonal relationships, playing the soap opera, more than just the monster of the week.
- ANGELUS:<< It was a good time. It doesn't mean we have to make a big deal. >>
BUFFY:<< It is a big deal! >>
ANGELUS:<< It's what? Bells ringing? Fireworks? A dulcet choir of pretty little birdies? Come on, Buffy. It's not like I've never been there before. >>
BUFFY:<< Don't touch me. >>
ANGELUS:<< I should have known you wouldn't be able to handle it. >>
BUFFY:<< Angel! I love you. >> - ("Innocence")
DAVID BOREANAZ: They consummate their relationship and his soul is lifted and he becomes evil again and he starts to go back to his old days because he's lost his conscience and he's now Angelus.
- WILLOW:<< Angel! >>
JENNY:<< He's not Angel any more. Are you? >>
ANGELUS:<< Wrong. I am Angel...at last. >>
XANDER:<< Oh, my God. >>
ANGELUS:<< I got a message for Buffy. >>
BUFFY:<< Why don't you give it to me yourself? >> - ("INNOCENCE")
MARTI NOXON: Whether those relationships are right or wrong is a personal matter. But they were living out those conflicts. And in our world they're metaphorised into "Oh, gee, I can't go out during the day. We can't have sex", which is problematic.
- BUFFY:<< You don' care any more, is that it? >>
ANGEL:<< It doesn't matter what I feel! >>
BUFFY:<< Then tell me you don't love me. >> - ("I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU")
MARTI NOXON: We were always playing the parallel of a couple who love each other dearly but whole real-life circumstances are gonna pull theme apart. In season 2 they weren't dealing with the reality of that.
- (BUFFY AND ANGEL KISSING) BUFFY:<< Angel... >> - ("I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU")
JOSS WHEDON: That's why we had Angel go bad. That's why people started dating. The relationships don't stay static, they broke apart, they came together.
- SPIKE:<< You might want to let up. They say when you've drawn blood, you've exfoliated. >>
ANGELUS:<< I'm the one who was freakin' violated. You didn't have this thing in you. >>
DRUSILLA:<< What was it? A demon? >>
ANGELUS:<< Love! >>
DRUSILLA:<< Poor Angel. >> - ("I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU")
JOSS WHEDON: I wanted to get deeper into their lives and take them to a more mature place because we knew what interested people in the show was more than that just "Grr, argh".
SEASON 3, EPISODE 10
"AMENDS"
MARTI NOXON: Buffy and Angel in season 3 understood the reality of their limitations as a couple.
- BUFFY:<< We have to do something. Soon. Now! >>
GILES:<< I'm still not sure what. >>
BUFFY:<< Find me these priest guys. Find me something I can pummel. >>
GILES:<< Let's not lose our heads. >>
BUFFY:<< Giles, he's slipping. I think we're losing him. >> - ("AMENDS")
MARTI NOXON: I often think about it as, if you were using a real-life metaphor, it's a relationship between a young girl and a guy who's just out of college or something.
- BUFFY:<< You came to see me to tell me that I can't see you? Angel, something is doing this to you. You just have to control it, ok? I know you're confused. >>
ANGEL:<< I think you're the one who's confused. I think you need to... >>
THE FIRST (JENNY):<< She wants you to taste her. Think of the peace. You'll never have to see us again. >>
BUFFY:<< Angel, how can I help you? >>
ANGEL:<< Leave me alone! >> - ("AMENDS")
MARTI NOXON:<< Sometimes those relationships work out. But often, the youngers person has growing in their direction to do and the older person already has a set path and those two worlds just can't coexist.
- ANGEL:<< I can't do it! >>
THE FIRST (JENNY):<< You have to do it. What else are you good for? >>
ANGEL:<< Get away from me! >>
THE FIRST (JENNY):<< Couldn't you just feel her? Couldn't you almost smell her skin? You never were a fighter, Angel. Don't start tryin' now. >>
- ("AMENDS")
MARTI NOXON: They were living that fantasy world of "we can make this work cos our feelings for each other are so strong".
- ANGEL:<< I can't do it again, Buffy. I can't become a killer. >>
BUFFY:<< Then fight it. >>
ANGEL:<< It's too hard. >>
BUFFY:<< Angel, please, you have to get inside! >>
ANGEL:<< They told me to kill you. You were in the dream. They told me to lose my soul in you and become a monster again. >>
BUFFY:<< I know that. What does it matter? >>
ANGEL:<< Because I wanted to! Because I want you so badly! >> - ("AMENDS")
MARTI NOXON: Season 3 was about growing up, about maturing in a relationship and the painful realisation that love isn't enough in some circumstances. And that's why it resonated for a lot people because that is true sometimes. Not always, but it is a definitely true.
- BUFFY:<< Angel, you have the power to do real good, to make amends. But if you die now, then all that you ever were was a monster! Angel, the sun is coming up. >>
ANGEL:<< Just go. >>
BUFFY:<< I won't. >>
ANGEL:<< Do you think this is simple? You can never understand what I've done. Now, go. >>
BUFFY:<< You are not saying. I won't let you. >>
ANGEL:<< Leave! >>
(Buffy squeals)
ANGEL:<< Am I a thing worth saving? >> - ("AMENDS")
JOSS WHEDON: It's strange for a show called Buffy the vampire slayer but the reality of the situation is always the most important thing we deal with.
- ANGEL:<< Look, this can't... >>
BUFFY:<< Ever be anything. I know. For one thing, you're, like, 224 years older than I am! >>
ANGEL:<< I just gotta...I gotta walk away from this. >>
BUFFY:<< I know. Me, too. >> - ("ANGEL")
MARTI NOXON: I wrote a lot of episodes in which Buffy and Angel stuff was really central. And I had a great passion for that relationship also. And being immature, didn't want to see it end. But, ultimately, I had to accept it, along with Buffy.
- Kiss from "I only have eyes for you" -
DAVID BOREANAZ: I was fortunate to be part of something that was unique. And I think that what Joss and David have done is redefined television, especially at this time, and have taken it to a different step. That goes to the writing.
- BUFFY:<< I know everything that you did because you did it to me. God, I wish that I wished you dead. I don't. I can't. >>
ANGEL:<< Buffy, please. Just this once, let me be strong. >> - ("AMENDS")
DAVID BOREANAZ: You can't really pin Buffy the vampire slayer as an action show or a drama or a comedy. I think it has elements of all that. It breaks it up.
(Images)
One moment you can be enthralled by the adventure in it, and the next you can be saddened by the drama. It has all those elements, and that helps, definitely.
