Sometimes something as small as a phone call can change lives around. The light from the tv glowed softly in the dark living room. Two blonde heads cuddled on the couch, a small child asleep on her Daddy's lap. The picture of contentment. The ring from the phone broke the sweet silence, Spike answered quickly so his daughter would not be awakened.

Buffy sighed as she moved Jacie on to her lap so Spike could talk easier. His face held a serious expression as she looked at him questioningly. He held a finger to his mouth for her to be quiet. Her frown deepened when she heard his last words, "Yes, I'll call you after she's asleep." He wrote down a number on back of the tv guide and hung up the phone. His face full of worry.

"Who was it?" Buffy demanded.

"A unhappy vampire named Thomas. He's from LA , seems Angel has caused a lot of trouble there. He has a small group of vampires there, they lack experience in these things and he wants some help to kill Angel. Seems to think that I might be interested in helping because it would gurantee you wouldn't see him again." Spike explained as he absentmindedly played with a strand of her hair.

Buffy's began to chew on her bottom lip, her mind turning, "What are we going to do?"

"I think I have a plan. Should be easy enough to convince them that I'm on their side but I need your help. And I'll have to call Giles and Peaches." He quickly explained his plan to her.

Buffy hesitated, "Spike are you sure this is a good idea?"

"You don't think it will work?" He asked frowning.

"I think it will work, but are you sure you want me to . I mean can you handle it?" She asked him with a sigh.

"Of course I can handle it." He said a little more sharply then he intended.

Buffy cringed slightly, he kissed her lightly on the cheek, "I'm sorry, it will be fine. Take Jacie to bed and I'll make the calls."

She looked worried as she took the sleeping baby to her bedroom. She took a shower and joined Spike in their bed. He looked tired already and the action hadn't started yet. She ran a gentle hand down his cheek and kissed him lightly. "Is it all set?"

He nodded, "Yes, tomorrow night we go to Sunnydale. It will be okay, Buffy." He pulled her closer to him and stroked her soft hair until she was sleeping peacefully next to him. With a sigh he thought about the plan he was going to put into motion. He hoped he could pull it off.

He had made the call to Thomas, had told him there was trouble in paradise, that Buffy was leaving to visit her Mother in Sunnydale, but he was sure she was meeting Angel. Spike was going to take the flight after hers and follow her. Thomas was intrigued he wanted to be sure he could trust Spike and he had found a way.

Spike watched through the airport window as Buffy and Jacie's plane taxied down the runway towards Sunnydale. He was soon joined by Thomas, "So she's gone?" He asked Spike with a smirk.

"Yes, and I leave on the next flight. She'll make her move tomorrow evening, she'll get into town too late tonight. All I have to do is follow her." Spike harshly.

Spike watched as Buffy kissed Jacie goodbye and took her Mother's car. He followed her at safe distance, he caught sight of Thomas following him. His plan was working perfectly.

He let Buffy stay quite a bit in front of him. He watched as she parked at the small hotel on the outskirts of town. Angel was waiting on the parking lot for her, he gathered her up against him and kissed her passionately. She pulled back and smiled at him, he took her hand and led her to a room. Spike and Thomas watchd the display, Thomas with a grin on his face, Spike's expression unreadable. He kept telling himself this was all pretend.

Angel unlocked the door to the room and Buffy went in first, he glanced at his watch, it's 9:00 showtime. He pulled her close to him and placed small kisses all over her face and neck, she pulled his face down to meet hers, their lips melded while she ran her hands through his dark hair. Angel picked her up and lie her on the bed never breaking the kiss. He had to admit that he was enjoying this playacting, it felt so good to have her in his arms again.

Buffy was amazed at the feelings coursing through her, she was kissing Angel, it had been so long. It felt bittersweet, like remembering something that was so happy at the time but is now long gone, a memory. She remembered when his kisses had been the only thing that mattered to her, that all her thoughts belonged to the dark haired vampire. Now, however, even as she kissed Angel her thoughts were with another vampire, a blond one.

Spike gave them 15 minutes before he burst through the door. Seeing Angel lying with Buffy on the bed, kissing her, her hands running through his hair, angered him, they looked so right together. He tried to rationalize that they were only acting, but it was too hard, he pulled Angel off of Buffy violently. He pummeled the taller vamps face with his fist, Angel was too shocked to react. Buffy placed herself between the two men, "Spike!" She screamed.

The blow came before she realized what had hit her, Spike had backhanded her face hard enough to send her reeling to the floor. She looked up at him hurt and fear in her eyes as she held her already reddening cheek. Angel was in Spike's face in a milisecond, "Get out!" He said gruffly physically picking up the shocked Spike and throwing him out the door of the room on to the pavement.

Spike looked around he noticed Thomas watching from around the corner. "You can have the whore." Spike screamed at him as he stood and marched to the car. Buffy stood in the doorway, tears streaming down her face. It was all Spike could do to keep from running to her, begging her forgiveness for his hitting her. He hadn't hit her since they were mortal enemies.

Angel managed to get the door fixed and turned his attention to Buffy. She had not spoken a word since Spike had driven off. He went to sit beside her, a gentle hand on her now purple cheek. She winced slightly then ever so softly spoke, "I guess we convinced them that Spike is on thier side."

"Buffy, he... Spike didn't mean to hurt you. He got caught up in the moment, he loves you. But he walks a thin line every day against his nature just to be with you. I was worried when he told me about this plan. But I'm sure it will be okay." He hugged her lightly. And hoped silently to himself that it would indeed be okay.

Thomas followed Spike to a bar, where he was drinking a tall beer. "So, I say I call my friends and the five of us go take out Angel in that room tonight. Close quarters five against one, shouldn't be a problem."

"Two, two against five. Buffy's there don't forget that." Spike said pointedly.

"We tranquilize the Slayer and then she's yours to do what you'd like with. Ray has a tranq gun, we get her as we go in, it's fast acting."

Spike nodded his head numbly. "Okay."

Thomas left agreeing to meet Spike at the hotel in and hour and a half. Spike called Giles and then the hotel room. Giles would have Xander along with the new Slayer and her Watcher there.

He then dialed the hotel room. Angel picked up "Hello."

"It's me. You've got about an hour and fifteen minutes before we get there, send Buffy to her Mothers, I don't want her there." Spike told him gruffly.

"Okay, that's wise. Would you like to speak to her?" Angel asked hopefully.

"No, there's no time." Spike replied in a whisper then continued "Giles is bringing backup there will be five of us."

"Spike, don't you think you should..." Angel started but Spike cut him off.

"Just make sure she's safe." He told him as he hung up the phone.

Buffy stared at Angel tears threatening to burst forth again. "He wouldn't speak to me, would he?" Her voice broke.

Angel ignored the question, "He wants you to go to your Mom's, he wants you safe. I agree. We'll meet you there when this all done. Don't worry." He placed his arm around her and walked her to the door.

Buffy drove to her Mom's in a daze. She wasn't sure what had happened tonight and she was more then a little scared. She lied to her Mother about the ugly bruise on her face and went to check on Jacie. The little girl was asleep in her Grandmother's bed. Buffy sat beside her and watched her sleep for a long time.

Angel was prepared when the five vampires came through the door, Giles, and the others had hidden in various parts of the room, between them and Spike, Thomas and his cronies never knew what hit them. Angel thanked Giles and the others for their help..

"You need to go to her. I told her we'd meet her after it was over. But you can tell her I'm okay. I think you two need to talk." Angel told Spike when they were finally alone.

"I can't go to her. I hit her, I hit her out of ridiculous anger and jealousy. I knew it wasn't real. I knew it, but when I saw you and Buffy on the bed. You looked so natural, I thought for a second maybe that's how it's supposed to be. It made me so crazy. How is she going to forgive me? How?" He shouted the last word.

"Because she loves you, she'll forgive you. Buffy has a high capacity for forgiveness, I know this better then anyone. Go to her. Go to her, now." Angel said forcefully.

"Maybe you're right." Spike muttered as he stood to go.

"And Spike thank you again for what you did tonight. I mean - I have to think that sometimes you might be tempted to get rid of me." Angel told him seriously.

"Buffy would kill me." Spike said with a half grin as he walked out the door.

Joyce had gone to bed by the time Spike arrived. She had left Jacie in her room, she had a feeling that Buffy and Spike needed some private time.

Spike knocked lightly on the door. Buffy answered in just a tee shirt and socks. She looked beautiful, until he saw the mark on her face. "Aren't you going to come in?" She asked softly.

He nodded and walked in the door. He gestured towards her face, "Did you have that looked at?" He asked her concerned.

"It's just a bruise, Spike it will heal. The question is will you, will you heal from this?"

"Can you forgive me?" He asked his voice hitching, he hated these emotions, yet he loved the fact that she could make him feel this strongly.

Buffy breached the small distance between them in record time, her arms were around him, her lips were on his, " Yes, yes I can forgive you." She murmered against his lips.

He held her tightly against him, "By the way, Peaches is safe and sound." He whispered into her hair.

Buffy giggled, "Good. Now can we go to bed?"

He nodded in agreement and picked her up tenderly carrying her up the stairs to her old room. He sat her down gently and sat down on the bed to undress. Buffy began to sprinkle soft kisses down the back of his neck, helping him off with his shirt.

"Buffy we don't have to, not tonight, I mean." He gently touched her bruised cheek.

"I want to Spike. I love you." She assured him lips finding lips.

They made love, slowly, tenderly and fell asleep in the early morning hours. Each assured that they were where they belonged.
